Here is the schedule for Thursday, Dec. 2, when you’ll meet with either Sue or Michelle to get feedback on your final project.

It’s very important that you can show us something that is nearly complete and ready to be published. The more complete your project is on Dec. 2, the better your feedback will be.

1:30 — Kiah and Kiara
2:30 — Kate and Elizabeth
3:30 — Sarah and Rich
4:30 — Katrina and Lacey
5:30 — Jenna and Tori

Reminder: No class on Thursday. (Sue and Michelle will be in their offices if you need anything.)

Good luck on your projects.

Your story format for this assignment:

__x___ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

______ Video

__x__ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

Domesti-PUPS (Providing Unique Personal Service) is an organization headquartered in Lincoln that trains dogs to assist people with special needs. To train their dogs, Domesti-PUPS has a collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Corrections where select inmates will train a dog for a year before the dogs are sent out to assist people with special needs.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

This story would best be told in an audio slideshow format because I think video would be dry and uneventful. Photos will clearly illustrate the relationship between an inmate and his trainee dog.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

It depends. I am still unsure about what part of the program they are currently in. If the dogs are currently being trained, I want to go visit an inmate when he is working with his dog and get photos/audio of their camaraderie and training. If the dogs have already “graduated” from their year of training and a new round of training has not begun, then I will show photos of an inmate with the dog he trained and then go visit the dog in its current assisting situation with a person with special needs and get photos of the dog working with that person.

So either it will be about the program and a current trainer/trainee relationship or it will be about a dog that has gone through the program and the effect on both the inmate and the person with special needs.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.
Michelle Ashley – Executive Director of Domesti-PUPS (she focuses on the service dog component)
Dick Spearman – involved with the pet therapy side of Domesti-PUPS
Inmate who has trained or is training a dog
Person with special needs who is currently being assisted with a Domesti-PUPS trained dog

Rich Schneider: Final Pitch

___xx__ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

___x__ Video

_____ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

In light of a new UNL study, “Schools that ban junk food at mealtime are 18% lighter,” I would like to do a story on the steps that LPS takes to ensure their students are nutritiously well fed.  The Nutrition Services Department for LPS has to walk a fine line between a moderate costing well-balanced meal that meets all federal, state and district requirements.  This story will discuss how that is accomplished.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

This story will be told in text form.  There will be many voices supplying nutritional information that will be best told and explained with a text story.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

I will supplement this story with a video.  My video will include B-roll of high school students as they get their lunch and prepare to eat it.  On the video I will have students telling me their opinion of the meals supplied by the school.  I will also have a school administrator talking about the benefits of each meal provided.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

I will talk to Mary G McGarvey and Patricia Kennedy the two UNL professors who were behind the initial study on snack foods.  Representatives of the LPS Nutrition Services Department.  And maybe some state senators or law makers about any legislation that deals with public school nutrition.

Tori Grdina – Final Project Pitch

Your Name: Tori Grdina

Your story format for this assignment:

__x___ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

__x___ Video

_____ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

For my final project I’ll be profiling the girl who was selected to play Clara in this year’s Nutcracker Ballet. Usually whoever is chosen has been dancing for a long time, and being in the Nutcracker takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s usually quite an accomplishment to be chosen – if nothing else – her face is up on the posters around Lincoln. I think whoever has been chosen this year likely has a great story behind their audition, leading role, and dance career.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

I think text is often ideal for a profile, but the video component also adds to the visual element of dance, since it will be about a dancer and her performances.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

I haven’t quite decided how I will proportion the video and the text yet, I think that will depend on Clara and what she has to say. I could make the video about her, and the text about the Nutcracker, or I could keep the text as a profile on her, and keep the video short just to let the audience see her dancing and performing a little. It will sort of depend on what kind of story she has to tell.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

I plan on talking to Clara, I’m actually having a difficult time digging up her full name, since the cast list has not been posted on the website. Once I track her down, I’ll probably interview her family, friends in the show, fellow dancing friends, and maybe even her director or someone similar.

Your Name: Kiara Letcher
Your story format for this assignment: Final

___XX__ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

_XX____ Video

___ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph): Hannah Kurth is a music student here at UNL. She does Operas and stuff  I want to do a story on the Operas that go on, and how she became apart of the program. Im not sure if I want to focus on her, or the fact that there IS opera and things like that going on in Lincoln.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

Video of the productions would be awessome because you could here it and see it. Pictures and text would work well also because you can tell the specifics of the program in print.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

Get shots of a opera happening, of their rehersals. Also of other students talking about opera and musicals in Lincoln and how they got involved.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.
