Reineke: Final Project Pitch

Your Name: Seanica Reineke
Your story format for this assignment:

_____ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

__XX___ Video

_____ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph): Alfred and Elva Trook are an elderly couple still living on their farm in Weeping Water, Neb. Though they don’t actually farm their land anymore, they still have full days every day. The Trooks have a schedule they go through each day, which includes Elva tending their garden, Alfred woodworking in his workshop, going to town for coffee and having a daily devotional together. They are still happy and active even though their activities aren’t exactly what they used to be. For the main part of my project, I will document a day in the life of the Trooks. For my side portion, I will write a short text story about the importance of elderly remaining active and how maintaining an active lifestyle affects the elderly, whatever that impact may be.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.
I’m going to spend an entire day with the Trooks, following them around, and I think this story is best as video because they sound like such a sweet, hardworking, busy couple and video can really accentuate their lives. I think seeing their movements, how they get around, hearing the sounds around their home and seeing them talk with the people in their town is going to give me a great opportunity to get some great footage and also provide the audience with a heart-warming story they wouldn’t get as well in a slideshow or text piece alone.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.
I will get each part of their day: Elva making breakfast from a variety of angles, the two of them doing their devotional together, Elva working in her garden, Alfred working with wood, the two of them having coffee in town, the two of them relaxing in the evening and also interviewing the two of them together and separate. I also want to get some shots of their home and their land.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

Alfred and Elva Trook: I’ve already contacted them and actually spoke to Elva. She told me the general layout of their daily routine. I will interview the two of them to get their background and have them tell what their lives have been like and are like today.

Julie Masters, Ph.D., UNO Department of Gerontology Chairperson: I will interview her about aging and the importance of staying active for my short text piece. She has done community service with various groups for the elderly, so I think she will be a great source.
