Fischman Video Pitch

Your Name: Katrina Fischman
Your story format for this assignment:

___ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

___XX__ Video

_____ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph): The Mexican American Student Association is doing its first Taco Sale of the year tomorrow (Thurs) in the union from 11:30-1.  The group usually does four sales a year and has been doing this since the 90s, usually selling out long before the sale is set to end.  The funds from this sale will be used towards the group’s  annual MASA Youth Latino Leadership Conference, where MASA brings Latino middle school students from all over Nebraska to teach them about higher education and to participate in leadership workshops.  I’m going with the angle of how this is a tradition of the group and will talk a little about what the group does on campus and tie it in with where the funds from the event will be going.

Explain why this story is best told using this format. I think video is the best option because there is a lot of action going on – members preparing the tacos and selling the tacos – that will easily make for good B-roll.  A text story wouldn’t bring it to life like video where the viewer can see the food and lines of people.  Also, it is better as a video rather than a slideshow because there will be plenty of sounds – the commotion with selling the tacos, the crunch of people eating the tacos, etc.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific. MASA is preparing the tacos in the multicultural center from 8-11 am so I plan to go and get some footage of them preparing the tacos using the five-shot sequence with plenty of closeups.  I will also attend when they start selling in the union and get footage – a close up of money exchange, a close up of student taking a bite of a taco, a medium shot of the members handing out the food.  Last year they sold out in the first hour, so I want to capture a wideshot of the long line.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

Karise Marie Carrillo – officer of MASA.  I already arranged an interview with her tomorrow during the food preparation, and she gave me some background info.  I’m going to have her on camera about how the tradition came about, what the money goes for, when is the next event, information about the club, etc.

Student or two buying tacos – thoughts on the event, if have came before, what attracted them to event, etc.
