Fischman Slideshow Pitch

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, the UNL Extension Education Center is hosting a workshop on bed bugs from 7-9:30 pm.  This is the second year the center has done the event.  The bed bug problem made headlines across the nation a few months back, and it is interesting to see how this problem is affecting Lincoln.  The event will include a demo with Spot, a bed bug sniffing dog, bed bug identification information (possibly bugs will be shown – they were last year), discussions of the chemical and non-chemical actions that can be taken against the bugs, information about how to inspect for bed bugs at home, and the LLCHD regulations of bedbugs and rental properties. This story is a way to localize a national news item and will be of interest to students as many of us are living in rental properties throughout school.  I talked to Karen at UNL Extension Education Center and she didn’t think it would be a problem if I attended and had me email the person in charge (but who is currently out of town) just to verify.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

I think this story will be interesting as a slideshow because of the visual elements, such as the demo with the bed bug sniffing dog.  I also will be able to capture people’s opinions on tape and them interacting with the demonstrations.  A slideshow will bring the event to life more than a text story, and there isn’t a lot of dynamic action so it wouldn’t work very well as a video.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

I will take pictures of the dog demonstration where there will be a bed that has bed bugs and the dog finds them, pictures of the bed bugs up close, people’s reactions to the demonstrations and information, and pictures of the presenters giving presentations.  I want to get audio from the presentations, catching the most interesting facts and tips.  I also plan to interview attendees  to get their thoughts on why they came and what they will take away from the event.

I talked to Karen of UNL Extension Education to get background information on the event.  I plan to find attendees at the event and talk to one of the presenters individually, either Barb Ogg, Clyde Ogg, or Harry Heafer, if I don’t get good audio from their individual presentations.
