Pitch: McCallister’s video story

Your Name:  Sarah McCallister
Your story format for this assignment:

_____ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)

__xxx__ Video

_____ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

On Thursday, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo will open its new Humboldt Penguin Habitat.  It is one of only 16 zoos in the country to house one of the rarest species of penguins.  Currently, only two Humboldt Penguins, Hugo and Lannie, have arrived in Lincoln, but more are expected to arrive by November and next spring for a total of 10.  The new habitat was constructed through fundraising efforts, with major contributions coming from the Lancaster County Board and a grant from the Visitors Improvement Fund along with gifts from the Hugo and Thelma Aspegren Charitable Trust and the WRK Family Foundation.  It would be really interesting to find out everything that went into having this habitat built, getting these penguins to Lincoln, what it means for the zoo and get some early reactions to the new exhibit.

Here is the press release for the exhibit opening.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

This story is best told in video format because adorable and animated animals such as penguins have to be shown in action.  In order to truly convey how the new exhibit will look, how the penguins are behaving and how zoo visitors are reacting, it needs to be caught on video.

How will you tell this story visually? Please be specific.

I will tell the story visually by getting a lot of shots of the penguins in action (swimming, waddling about, etc.) as well as the new habitat.  These visuals will be shown as John Chapo talks about the exhibit.  I also plan to get some shots of children’s excited faces as they watch the penguins.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

John Chapo — President and CEO of Lincoln Children’s Zoo.  I’ve called him and scheduled an appointment for an interview on Saturday.  I intend to get all of the background information about the new exhibit from him.

If a penguin caretaker is available, I’ll talk to him to find out what it takes to care for the penguins and what it’s like to interact with them.

I will also try to talk to as many zoo visitors at the exhibit as possible.  I at least want to talk to some parents and some children to see how they are enjoying the new exhibit, what they like about it and what it means to have it here in Lincoln.
