Kiah’s audio slideshow story

Your Name:  Kiah Haslett
Your story format for this assignment:

____ Text (2 photos and/or graphics)
_____ Video
___X__ Audio slideshow

Your pitch (in one short paragraph):

The Lincoln StarTran bus system has 12 routes and provides 1.9 million rides a year. On Sept. 29, two of those routes will be eliminated due to budget reasons and low ridership.
Route 56, “Neighborhood South” makes stops at the Veterans hospital, passes the mall, goes south along 84th and crosses Pioneers Blvd. The route logs 547 rides a month.
Route 57, “Neighborhood North” stops at Westfield Mall before heading north along 48th St. to Havelock St. and east to 84th street. The route logs 983 rides a month. In comparison, the next lowest route, the 54, logs 5,330 rides a month.
The story will examine the reasons for cutting the service, how much money will be saved, and speak with riders in its last days of the route and their plans for future transportation.

Explain why this story is best told using this format.

This story has the personalities and pictures of the StarTran director and the people who rely on these buses, as well as the sights and sounds of buses arriving and departing and people waiting. There is action and movement, but not compelling enough for real-time movement. I also imagine there will be good opening and closing photos, as well as wide, medium and tight shots.

List the names and titles of the sources (both those you have talked with already and those you plan to talk to) and describe what role they will play in the story.

Larry Worth, StarTran Transit manager
He can provide all the reasons to cancel the route, dollars, ridership, etc., and has detailed the conditions using the image of the bus. I want to discuss what riders should do once the route is cancelled and if it will ever come back. This is the news part of the story and will contain the one side of the story’s conflict.

Riders on the bus
I plan to wait at the Westfield Mall on the weekend, when the bus probably has the most people riding it. I will talk to people about their reactions, their wait, how they amuse themselves, what they’re planning on doing once the route is cancelled. Photos include stopping at various stops along each route and taking pictures. This will be the effect part of the story and contain the second part of the conflict.
